The idea of interviewing for a role you’ve been pursuing for so long can appear to be quite daunting, but with the right approach you can execute your interview with ease and confidence! There are a number of areas to consider to set you up to give it your best shot. We’ll start off with preparation.
Do your research
It’s crucial you are well equipped with knowledge on the company, industry and role before you go into your interview. Most interviewers will look out for whether you’ve taken the time to fully understand the company that you are interviewing for, including what the company ethos is, the services they provide, and any further information on past or future development.
Understanding ways where your experience, or own motivations align with the business and team is a great way to demonstrate how you would be a great addition. This shows that you’ve taken your time to learn and understand how the business functions, and showcases commitment and a real interest for the position you are pursuing. If your interviews are led by assessments, or critical thinking tests, make sure you familiarize yourself with the relevant material beforehand, and always ensure your work methodology is visible throughout. Practicing potential exercises with a friend or family member is always a great way to brush up on your knowledge and skills, and put those nerves at ease.
First impressions count!
Undoubtedly, it’s always ideal to make a great first impression. Don’t forget to plan your journey beforehand to ensure punctuality and demonstrate that you’re reliable and conscientious with your time, and the time of others.
It’s always important to look the part; whether this is for an in person interview, or over a video communication software, professional and tidy attire doesn’t go amiss in either case! If your interview is held online, it’s important to get well acquainted with the software, and joining the meeting five minutes early is a great way to avoid a last minute panic and really get yourself in the right headspace as you would for an in person interview.
Presentation
How you present yourself throughout your interview is also a key factor to consider, nonverbal communication can be just as important as verbal. Positive body language never goes unnoticed, so a straight posture, eye contact, and attentive listening shows you’re engaged with the interviewer.
Show interest
To further demonstrate engagement and interest for the role, it’s always important to ask questions at the end of your interview, so have a think about what else you would like to know about the position and the company prior to the interview.
Asking questions is a great way to show true interest as well as helping you better understand the opportunity at hand. It’s important to take your time and thoroughly think when answering questions, and using the STAR method when appropriate (situation, task, action and result) ensures that you walk the interviewer through your answers with minimal confusion and a full understanding of the topic in question.
